Approximately 14% of pupils in Rochdale have special educational needs (SEN). This is a legal term and describes the needs of a child who has a difficulty or disability which makes learning harder for them than other pupils their age.
According to the SEN and Disability Code of Practice 2015, children and young people’s special education needs fall into 4 broad areas:-
- Communication and interaction
- Cognition and learning
- Social, emotional and mental health
- Sensory and/or physical needs
There are some children and young people who may have a rare medical condition or disability that may not yet have its own page on the Local Offer. There are other medical conditions such as Down’s syndrome which may be a “sensory and/or physical need” but equally could be a “communication and interaction” need or a “cognition and learning” need. So, if you type in a key word into the Local Offer and you are not getting the information you want; try typing in one of the four broad areas of need rather than a specific medical condition or disability.
