It can be overwhelming when you need support but do not know where to turn or who is the best person to contact. 

This information page has been developed to give you a starting point on where you can contact for support

Who do I contact if I need care and support?

If you are aged 18 or over and you would like to apply for care and support from the council, you will need to enter your postcode on the GOV.UK website (external link) to make sure you apply for support from the correct council.

Who do I contact if I need support as a carer?

If you are a carer for a person aged 18 or over and you would like to apply for a carers assessment, you will need to enter the postcode for the person you are caring for on the GOV.UK website (external link) to make sure you apply to the correct council for carer support.

Who do I contact for medical or dental advice and support?

If you require non urgent medical or dental support

Dial 111 for non-urgent medical or dental advice

When you call 111 you will be assessed, given advice and directed straightaway to the local service that can help you best.

NHS 111 is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Calls from landlines and mobile phones are free. 

If you are unwell and need to be seen

Contact your GP

Before you make an appointment to see your GP, consider the alternatives. Your local pharmacist may be able to give you the help you need, so you won't have to spend time waiting for an appointment. Pharmacists are highly trained health professionals, and may offer a wider range of health services than you might think.

If you require medical or dental support urgently or out of hours

Dial 999 for urgent medical advice and support:

You should contact 999 when someone is seriously ill or injured and their life is at risk, call 999 and don't panic. You can contact emergency services via SMS if you are deaf, hearing impaired or have a speech impediment. When you should go to hospital

Only go to accident and emergency (A&E) in serious circumstances, such as:

  • Severe pain 
  • Heavy bleeding 
  • Injuries to the face, mouth, or teeth 
  • Having suicidal thoughts

If you're not sure whether you should go to A&E, contact NHS 111, who will be able to advise you.

Out of hours GP surgery

Contact your GP surgery and you will hear an automated message for the out of hours doctor that you can contact.

Urgent dental service

You can contact the Emergency Dental Access Service if you are in pain or have an urgent problem and can’t get an appointment with your own dentist (or if you don’t have one). Appointments only and NHS dental fees apply.

your dentist should have an automated message with a contact number for an out of hours dentist for you to contact

Who do I contact to report abuse, neglect or a crime?

If you or someone you know has been subject to a crime

Dial 999 for emergencies such as when someone is seriously ill or injured and their life is at risk, call 999 and don't panic. Dial 101 for concerns that do not require an emergency response for example, if your car has been stolen or your property has been damaged.
