Talk to Learn Team (Rochdale Additional Needs Service)
About
The Talk To Learn Team is made up of specialist education professionals and speech and language therapists. We work intensively with young children who have developmental speech and language disorders.
What we do
We aim to give the children the skills they need to communicate with others and make progress in school. The team works together with families, settings and schools to create the best support for each child.
We offer advice and information and promote good practice for children with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN). We also offer training for Rochdale settings and schools and for parents who have children on our caseload.
How we work
The team helps parents and education staff to come to a shared understanding of each child's speech and language needs. We will help to work out what helps your child to communicate best, both at home and in nursery or school. We work alongside the NHS speech therapy service to meet your child's needs.
How to access the service
You can ask your setting or school's Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) or Speech and Language Therapist if it would be a good idea for your child to access this service. If the SENCO feels your child may meet the criteria to access the service, a referral form will be completed which you will be asked to sign.
Practitioners, please sign into your Our Rochdale account to access the referral form and pre-referral guidance which can be found on the referral pathway document (there are separate pathways for PVI settings and schools).
What is DLD?
Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) means children have significant ongoing difficulties understanding and/or using spoken language. DLD was previously known as Specific Language Impairment (SLI).
A child with DLD may also have a speech disorder affecting speech sounds; however it is not caused by other conditions such as hearing loss, physical impairment, autism, or severe learning difficulties.
For further information please see Raising Awareness of DLD video under YouTube.
