Derby Street Children's Centre

Children's Centres provide children up to 5 years old and their families with a range of services and information.

We help your child develop through a range of different play activities and also to provide the opportunity for you to attend groups and courses at the centre. We are linked to other local services such as the Family Information Service, NHS and Job Centre Plus and you can access help from professionals including midwives, health visitors and the family learning team.

Monday sessions

First Steps into Music - 12.45 - 13.15pm

Play and learn, song and rhyme, baby sensory play, growing hands, messy play, breastfeeding groups, outreach story time, music and movement and turbo tots are all drop in sessions. All other sessions must be booked.

Free fun music classes for babies, preschool children aged 0-4 years. Term time only, Must book.

Incredible Years Baby - 1pm - 2pm

During this course we talk about social, emotional and brain development in babies and how to build a strong bond with your baby. We look at ways of talking and playing that can be great fun for both of you. Baby stays with you during each group session and crèche is provided for older children.

Must book - For families with babies aged 0-4 months.

The next course will start in September 2022. Please ask staff to be added on to waiting list.

Introduction to Children’s Centre Welcome session Monday 25 July 22 1pm – 2pm

Come and join us at this play session if you’re new to the centre and want to know more about the children’s centre in the Heywood locality.

Tuesday sessions

Baby Sensory Play 9.30am - 11am

A stimulating session for babies to promote relaxation, communication and bonding. Suitable for 0-6 months.

Messy Play 1pm - 2.30pm

A session in which your child can explore different textures. Food will be used so please speak to staff if your child has any allergies. Suitable for ages 0-5 years.

Early Words Together 1pm - 2pm

6 week course for children aged 2+ to promote Communication and Language. Must book.

Wednesday sessions

Play and Learn 9.30am - 11.30am

Join us for a variety of indoor and outdoor activities for you and your child to promote school readiness. Suitable from birth to 5 years.

Baby Massage 1pm - 3pm

A block of 6 weekly sessions for your baby. Supports bonding and attachment and baby’s brain development. Helps ease colic and builds communication skills

For babies aged 0-6 month. Must book.

School Readiness Wednesday 20 July 22 1pm – 2.30pm

This 4 week course will help prepare your child for school. Must book.

Thursday sessions

Elklan for Parents 9.30am - 11.30am 6 week course

An opportunity for parents to gain an understanding of how to promote communication and language skills to help children become school ready. Crèche provided. For ages 0-5 years. Must book.

National Breastfeeding Week 27 June - 3 July 2022

Breastfeeding Support Group Thursday 28 July 22 1.30pm - 3pm

Come along and join us in this informal friendly drop in session especially for mums who are breastfeeding and also mums to be who would like more information. This session will be delivered by your local Health Visitors.

Friday sessions

Growing Hands -incorporating Dough Disco, Finger Gym and Write Dance 10.30am - 11.30am

Activities to help your child strengthen fine motor muscles to develop writing skill and promote school readiness. Suitable for children aged 2+.

Bump to Baby 9.30am - 11am

A 3 week course for mums and dads to be from 16 weeks+

Group sessions focusing on bonding, recognising baby’s needs, safe sleep, and equipment needed, feeding, dressing your baby and more. Must book.

Baby Turbo Tots 1.30pm - 3pm

A play session especially for babies. None walking babies only.

Music and Movement 1pm - 2pm

Fun action songs for children (and adults) to dance to. Encourages children to join in and respond spontaneously to music. For age 16 months+.  

Food Club

The Food Club is open Fridays 9.30am to 11.30am, there is a small cost to join the food club and then a small weekly charge.

Each member will be given a time to come and collect their food. You must book before you attend the food club.
