About
Habilitation is the name given to specialist mobility and independent living skills training for children and young people with a visual impairment.
What is Habiliation training?
The outcomes of this training are:
- Maximum degree of independent living.
- Maximum degree of independent travel and mobility.
- Emotional well-being, including self-confidence and self-esteem.
- Maximum degree of social inclusion.
- The ability to use any habilitation tools as aids to mobility and independence for example long cane.
- The ability to be able to assess risks and plan for likely areas of personal difficulty in mobility and independent living.
Habilitation training includes the teaching of early movement skills, as well as cane training, route learning and independent living skills.
In Rochdale, the training is delivered by a Habilitation and Special Support Assistant with a qualification in Paediatric Habilitation. A teacher for children with a visual impairment will refer your child to the Habilitation and Special Support Assistant for assessment.
Who is the training available for?
Habilitation training is available to children and young people with a visual impairment living within the borough, if they are identified as having difficulties with their mobility and independence skills and this is directly as a result of a visual impairment.
This training can be offered at any time from the child’s birth until they leave school.
